How to apply for a Working with Children CheckVictoria · paid tutoring
Start here

Open Service Victoria using the button below. Complete the government application in the new tab, then return to Ivory.

Already hold a current Employee clearance? Use that clearance. If you only have a Volunteer clearance, use the official upgrade process.

  1. Start a new Working with Children Check application.

Use the Service Victoria link above. Follow the prompts to begin an application for yourself.

  2. Choose Employee for paid work.

Choose the Employee clearance, not Volunteer. This is the paid-work check, including for paid contractors.

  3. Complete the identity and photo checks.

For online identity verification, have one accepted Group A document and one Group B document ready—for example, an Australian driver licence and Australian passport. Follow the photo prompts.

Check accepted identification. If online verification is not available to you, follow the Australia Post instructions.

  4. Enter your details and tutoring work.

Use your legal name and accurate contact details. Select coaching/private tuition for children (category 28) when asked about your work.

If the form asks for Ivory’s organisation details, ask Ivory for the confirmed details before submitting.

  5. Complete child-safety training when required.

From 19 October 2026, new applications, renewals and Volunteer-to-Employee upgrades require the government’s child-safety training. Follow the Service Victoria prompts; allow about 45 minutes.

  6. Review, pay and submit.

Check every answer, pay the Employee application fee shown on the official site and submit. Save your application reference and confirmation email.

  7. Return to your Ivory application.

Choose “Application pending” while waiting. Once approved, have your clearance number, type and expiry date ready. During onboarding, add Ivory using the organisation details we provide. Ivory will verify your clearance and organisation confirmation before you begin teaching.

What to look for on your clearance

This illustration highlights the key details; it does not reproduce a government card. See the official card and digital examples.

Working outside Victoria? Confirm the relevant local screening requirements with Ivory before applying or paying. See the official guidance on adding your organisation and checking clearance status.

How to apply for an ABNFor eligible contractors · free government registration
Before you begin

Start by checking your eligibility for an ABN. If you’re eligible and don’t already have one, follow the numbered steps below to apply through the official Australian Business Register website.

You can submit your Ivory application now and provide your ABN before you start tutoring.

Open the official ABN application pageOfficial website: abr.gov.au · opens in a new tab
  1. Check that you are eligible.

Apply only if you are carrying on, or taking steps to start, a business or enterprise. Employee work does not qualify you for an ABN for that activity. Check the official sole-trader guidance if unsure.

  2. Check whether you already have an ABN.

Search your name or existing number on ABN Lookup. If you find a record, check its status and ask the ABR whether you need to update or reactivate it before starting a new application.

  3. Open the government application.

Use the button above. On the ABR page, select “Apply or reapply for an ABN”. If you will operate your own tutoring business as one individual, select the individual/sole-trader option when asked about the business structure.

  4. Enter your own personal and business details.

Have your legal name, date of birth, TFN, contact details, business address and intended start date ready. Describe your activity accurately, such as private tutoring. Use your own legal details—not Ivory’s.

Your TFN belongs in the official ABR application; Ivory does not ask for it in this tutor application.

  5. Review your answers and submit.

Read the declarations and confirm that your answers are true. Applying directly through the ABR is free. Additional registrations, such as GST or a business name, are separate decisions; follow the official guidance for your circumstances.

  6. Save the result and return to Ivory.

If successful, save your 11-digit ABN and confirmation. If the application needs review, save the reference number and wait for the outcome. When Ivory requests onboarding details, provide your ABN and matching legal name.

What an ABN record looks like

An ABN is a business number. Your confirmation or an ABN Lookup record provides the details; there is no Ivory-issued ABN card.
